Network Registration Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Print Friendly and PDF

How do I register a gaming, streaming, and media device on the network?

Although gaming, streaming, and media devices are allowed on the student network, The Office of Information Technology does NOT provide technical support for any such devices.

How to register your non-computer device:

In order to attach your gaming device to the network, you have two options.

  1. If your device is has a web browser, navigate to http://netreg.utk.edu/ after connecting to the network. Click on "Manual Device Registration" and follow the instructions.
  2. If your device does not have a web browser, you can submit your request from the web browser on your computer. Go to http://netreg.utk.edu/games/ and follow the instructions.

Before registering your device, you will need to know the MAC address of your system.

The MAC Address is a 12-character sequence containing both letters and numbers. If you do not know your MAC address, you can try following the instructions below. As stated earlier, we do not provide technical support for these devices and if these instructions do not work, you will need to contact the manufacturer, not the HelpDesk.

To find your MAC address for common devices, follow the article How do I find the MAC address of my gaming console, Kindle, Apple TV, or Roku?

My device does not have a browser. How can I register for network access?

Contact the Office of Information Technology with the following information to register your device:

  • NetID
  • Name of your dorm and your room number
  • Type of device
  • MAC address of device*

*The MAC address is the hardware address that is assigned to every network capable device. If you are unsure where to locate your device’s MAC address, please consult the provided manual or contact the manufacturer for assistance.

Once you have this information contact us at:

  • Phone: (865) 974-9900
  • Contact Form: http://help.utk.edu
  • Walk-In HelpDesk: Commons @ Hodges Library

After registration is complete, the device will need to restart in order to reconnect to the network.

**Note: Personal hardware, such as routers and switches will interfere with UT’s network and are not allowed and will not be registered.

Can I register multiple devices on the UT network?

You may register up to 20 networkable devices, however, due to increased wireless availability in the residence halls, many rooms may only have one available Ethernet port.

PLEASE NOTE: Routers or any other type of "connection splitting" devices are not allowed for use on UT's network. The data produced by any such device will be interpreted by our network health monitoring software as a malfunctioning port, and will result in your port being disabled.

How do I set up a brand new wi-fi only tablet on the UT network?

Many wi-fi only tablets (e.g. Apple iPad, Android tablets, or Windows 8 tablets) require a device to connect to a wireless network as part of their initial setup process when the device is powered on for the first time. Since devices must be registered with the UT network before they can connect to the Internet, this can be troublesome for these devices. The workaround for this issue is to connect to the ut-open network and enter a non-UT email address (such as a Gmail or Yahoo address) under the "Non-sponsored Guests" log in. Once you have completed your device's initial setup process, you can then connect to the ut-open or eduroam wireless networks and complete network registration.
