Information About Jan 17 IRIS Password Reset Email and Office 365 Email Issues

Print Friendly and PDF

The UTK Office of Information Technology (OIT) was notified of an information security threat on one of the University’s commercially purchased systems. In response, we have disabled Basic Authentication for a majority of Office 365 users.

An email was sent out on January 17, 2020 around noon EST from the IRIS HelpDesk; this is a legitimate message. If you are an IRIS user, please reset your password. (See below for more information about the IRIS password reset email)

Additionally, some mobile devices are unable to connect to Office 365. OIT recommends using the Outlook app for checking your Office 365 account, however, for some clients, deleting and re-adding the account may resolve the issue. Android Mail does not support Modern Authentication, so Android devices will require the Outlook app in order to connect to Volmail.

We have no evidence that anyone’s password has been compromised, but as a precaution we will require all IRIS SAP GUI users to change their NetID password before 6 p.m. EST today, Jan. 17.

If you are using two-factor authentication, access to the IRIS web and many of the University’s systems are protected. However, not all systems are currently enforcing two-factor authentication, including the SAP GUI. Because you have elevated privileges to IRIS, you will need to change your password. If you are using two-factor authentication and you change your password to a new 12-16 character password, you will maintain the non-expiring password policy. *Remember, IRIS passwords:

  1. Do not allow the first three characters of the password to be identical (e.g. AAA)
  2. Do not allow the first character to be an ! (exclamation point) or ? (question mark).

If you need help changing your password, please contact your campus HelpDesk or visit the IRIS Password Reset page at iris.tennessee.edu/help/password-reset/.
