How do I add a Discussion Board link to a content area in my Blackboard Learn course site?

Print Friendly and PDF

Typically, students access the Discussion Board via the Tools link on their Course Menu, but you can also add a link to a Discussion Board forum in any content area within your Blackboard Learn course site. This enables you to use Discussion Board Forums in learning units and sequenced assignments, and it also makes it easier for students to find the appropriate forum when responding to an assignment.

  1. From the course menu on the left hand side of your course site, click on the Content Area to which you'd like to add a link to your Discussion Board.

  2. Place your cursor over the Tools button at the top of the Content Area's display page and choose Discussion Board from the embedded drop-down menu.

  3. From the Create Link: Discussion Board page you can now select the specific type of Discussion Board link you'd like to add. Although they're not numbered, there are essentially three options:

To link to a list of all Forums on the Discussion Board page

  1. Select the Link to Discussion Board Page radio button (note: this is selected by default).
  2. In the bottom right-hand corner, click Next.
  3. Enter the link name and description.
  4. Set page availability by selecting Yes or No.
  5. Next to Track Number of Views, select Yes or No.
  6. Set Date Restrictions by selecting the date and time ranges of availability.
  7. Click Submit.

To link to a specific Discussion Board Forum

  1. Select the Select A Discussion Board Forum radio button.
  2. Select the forum you want from the choices listed under "select forum below".
  3. Click Next.
  4. Enter the link name and description.
  5. Set link availability by selecting Yes or No.
  6. Next to Track Number of Views, select Yes or No.
  7. Set Date Restrictions by selecting the date and time ranges of availability.
  8. Click Submit.

To create a new Discussion Board Forum

  1. Click the Create New Forum button.
  2. On the Create Forum page, enter the name and description for the forum.
  3. Select the Forum Availability that you want for your forum.
  4. Under Forum Settings, select the settings you prefer.
  5. Click Submit.

NOTE: Any Discussion Board Forum link created in a Content Area can be reordered as any other Content Item can. In addition, Adaptive Release and Review Status rules can be applied to the link.
