What is a UNIX account?

Print Friendly and PDF

Your UNIX account allows you to access your online web storage account. From here, you can upload your own website or other personal files. Each UNIX account comes with 50mb of quota space.  If you need a more robust system, we recommend our LINUX solution.

Active students, faculty, and staff are eligible for UNIX accounts.  For anyone who leaves UT in good standing, you will retain access to your account for 1 year after you have left the University.

Managing Your Account

Managing Your Website

Setting Up Your Account

  1. Log into your account using an SFTP Client.  Configuration Instructions for several SFTP applications are available in the OIT Knowledge Base.  Basic settings are provided below:
    • Host Name: unix.cas.utk.edu
    • Port Number: 22
    • Protocol: SFTP
  2. Create your public_html folder (How-to Instructions)

Uploading Files

You have two options for uploading files to your website:

  1. VolSpace, an online web interface
  2. SFTP Clients will connect to the UNIX server and allow you to transfer files from your computer.
